Richard Haines, Fashion Illustrator

Brooklyn, NY

Details of Richard at work.

Richard Haines’ motivations are simple. “All I really want to do is make a beautiful line on a piece of paper,” explains the Brooklyn-based illustrator behind the wildly popular blog What I Saw Today, a digital repository filled with hand-drawn pictures of stylish men and other things that catch his eye. “When that happens for me, it feels like I’m doing exactly what I’m supposed to be doing.”
That love of drawing is what first brought Haines to New York in the 1970s. But Plan A: putting his artistic skills to professional use, quickly fell by the wayside. “I backed away from it,” he says. “I had never technically studied illustration, so I was intimidated by the big names that were around then.” On to Plan B: a career in fashion, focusing on menswear. “In retrospect, I went into an even more difficult field with fashion design,” he laughs. “But at the time, being young and ambitious, I didn’t realize that.” ●
