Esteban del Río, Professor

San Diego, CA

In the mornings, Esteban del Río works at a small desk in his living room, looking down over the city of San Diego as it sprawls eastwards from Mount Helix. “I live in the city I grew up in,” he says, standing to add another log to the fire. “That’s increasingly rare among those I know.”
At twenty-three, del Río headed east to pursue a PhD in media and cultural studies at Amherst College in Western Massachusetts. He moved with his college girlfriend, Alicia, and together they played at being East Coast bohemians, attending lectures and debates, rock shows and symphonies. But Southern California was calling. On completing his PhD, del Río was offered a visiting lecturer post at his alma mater, The University of San Diego. He and Alicia moved back west; they were married in Founders Chapel at USD.
